Benefits of Giving up Cigarette Smoking

You already know that cigarette smoking is bad for you so let’s not pursue that negative outlook. Instead, let’s pursue the positive. Here are some of the great things that really do happen after you quit smoking:

Twenty Minutes after you Quit
In twenty minutes (or less) your heart rate will start to drop back to normal. (CDC 2004)

Two Hours after you Quit
Your blood pressure, pulse, and even the temperature of your extremities may begin to improve.

Twelve Hours after you Quit
Carbon monoxide levels in your blood stream will begin to decrease allowing allowing your oxygen levels to normalize. (CDC, 2004)

Twenty-Four Hours
Your heart attack risk has already decreased.

Forty-Eight Hours
Damaged nerve endings begin to regrow and your senses of smell and taste begin to increase. (Cleveland Clinic, 2007)

Three Days
Your bronchial tubes are beginning to relax. Breathing is becoming easier.

Two to Three Weeks

Your lungs are actually beginning to repair.

One Year
Heart disease risk has lowered by fifty per cent. (CDC, 2004)

Five Years
Your risk of stroke is the same as a non-smoker. (CDC, 2004)

Ten Years
Your chance of dying from lung cancer will drop to half that of a smoker’s. Your chances of developing cancers of the mouth throat, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas also drop too. (CDC, 2004)

Fifteen Years
Your risk for heart disease has now returned to that of a non-smoker. (CDC, 2004)

Long Term Benefits
According to the American Heart Association, non-smokers, on average, live fourteen years longer than smokers. (AHA, 2011)

Great news, right?
