Using Hypnosis to Cope with Nicotine Withdrawal

If you choose to quit cigarette smoking, the reality of the situation is that you will go through some form of nicotine withdrawal. It can’t be helped. Nicotine is an addictive substance.

Nicotine withdrawal is actually a group of symptoms that occur within the first few weeks of decreasing or quitting the intake of nicotine altogether. The most documented symptoms include anger, anxiety, cravings, depression, hunger, impatience, interrupted sleep, irritability, lack of concentration, restlessness, and weight gain. However, there are many other forms withdrawal symptoms can take as well. The strongest symptoms usually occur in the first few days and begin to lessen over a period of two to four weeks.

But here’s the good news. Hypnosis may actually help to alleviate these withdrawal symptoms. As a matter of fact, many individuals come out of hypnosis thoroughly and permanently satisfied on every level that they will never light up another cigarette again.

Excuses Be Gone with Hypnosis!

So far so good….

You’ve become aware of and accepted all the great health benefits that can be yours once you’ve quit cigarette smoking.

You’ve identified the various therapies (including hypnosis) that are readily available to help you achieve success.

And you’ve laid out your plan and made the necessary arrangements before starting your quest to become cigarette free.

Now let’s get rid of those excuses. You know, those crippling enabling beliefs that will hold you captive in your present state. They’re not your friends and will only serve to sabotage your efforts. You may not even know you have excuses, let alone what they are. Here are a few of the more common excuses and why you really shouldn’t let them be relevant:

  1. Quitting cigarette smoking leads to weight gain. It’s true that nicotine can boost your metabolism so if you decide to actually eat a meal rather than skip it and smoke, you’ll probably gain a few pounds…. initially. However, there’s no reason for this to become an ongoing occurrence. If you remember in Holiday Weight Loss with Hypnosis there have been specific studies done proving hypnosis is highly effective, not only with regard to quitting smoking, but also in keeping the weight off at the same time.
  2. The damage is done. But if you read the April 6th post you already know that damage can be reversed
  3. It’s the only way to alleviate stress. It may be your present habit, but you can absolutely replace it with a better-for-you choice (and hypnosis can help here too).
  4. Nicotine products do as much damage as cigarettes without the enjoyable side effects. Cigarettes contain 4,000 other compounds (including at least 80 carcinogens). By substituting a regulated dose of nicotine for cigarettes you’ll immediately eliminate unnecessary toxins from your system

Do any of these excuses sound the least bit familiar? The big question is how to go about freeing yourself from them. Yet again, hypnosis may be your best choice.

Quitting Cigarettes? Let’s Get Started with Hypnosis!

OK, you’ve not only decided it’s time to quit smoking, you are absolutely committed to a positive outcome. Congratulations! That’s awesome!

The next step is to figure out the method you want to use. It won’t be easy, but you’re up to the challenge! And keep in mind that hypnosis could be your best ally.

Here are the top methods presently employed when withdrawing from cigarettes:

Alternative Therapies – This is the category that acupuncture, hypnosis, and meditation fall under. These therapies address both mental and physical habits that you have developed pertaining to smoking. While some people have used these methods alone and accomplished outstanding results, they are excellent complements to other treatments as well.

Behavioral Therapy – In this therapy you will work with a counselor to identify “triggers” and create a plan to deal with them.

Cold Turkey – With this method there is no outside support; no aids, therapy, or medicines of any kind.

Medicine – This includes medications prescribed by your doctor such as buproprion and varenicline to ease cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy -  This treatment comes in the form of gum, inhalers, lozenges, patches, and sprays. These items will deliver the nicotine your body is craving in a much safer form. Gradually you’ll decrease your nicotine consumption and hopefully give it up altogether. Keep in mind that if you’re under the age of eighteen, you’ll need a doctor’s permission in order to use this type of therapy.

Support Therapies -  These therapies employ smoking-cessation counselors and stop-smoking support groups.

Treatment Combinations -  Exactly what it says. You may use one, two, or any number of the methods listed above in conjunction with each other.

While some of these methods may work better than others, the real question (that only you can answer) is which of these are you going to stick to? And once you’ve decided, rest assured that hypnosis is another tool at your disposal that may address any of your identified triggers and help you not only gain success, but do so on your terms.

Benefits of Giving up Cigarette Smoking

You already know that cigarette smoking is bad for you so let’s not pursue that negative outlook. Instead, let’s pursue the positive. Here are some of the great things that really do happen after you quit smoking:

Twenty Minutes after you Quit
In twenty minutes (or less) your heart rate will start to drop back to normal. (CDC 2004)

Two Hours after you Quit
Your blood pressure, pulse, and even the temperature of your extremities may begin to improve.

Twelve Hours after you Quit

Happy New Year!! How’s are you progressing so far? Have you set any goals yet? Identified any dreams?
